Born from a Real Problem on a Family Smallholding

VuxLore began with two brothers, a family smallholding and a problem that never seemed to stop.

Surrounded by paddocks, fields and forest, the smallholding was home to dogs, cats, emus, ferrets, rabbits and ducks. It was a wonderful place to live and care for animals—but it was also an environment where ticks were encountered continuously.

Checking the animals and removing ticks became a regular, time-consuming part of life.

When the Ticks Did Not Stop

At the time, the two brothers had to make a long-distance commute away from the smallholding.

While they were gone, their mother, sister and a young child were often the only family members there. Their father was also unavailable to help, but the animals still needed care—and the ticks did not stop simply because the brothers were away.

That brought an everyday problem into sharp focus: the family needed tick removal tools that the people remaining at home could use comfortably and confidently.

The Limitations of Existing Tools

The family used the conventional options commonly available at the time, including small tick hooks, tweezers and tick-removal cards.

Through repeated use across different animals and tick sizes, those tools did not provide the complete solution they needed. Some felt uncomfortable or difficult to control. Others lacked the strength or durability required for frequent use, and breakages or unsuccessful attempts added to the frustration.

The most important issue was accessibility.

Their mother lived with severe arthritis. Her limited grip strength made many small, thin or awkwardly shaped tools extremely difficult—and sometimes impossible—for her to use successfully.

A product could technically remove a tick, but that did not make it practical for every person who needed to use it.

Adapting What Was Available

The brothers began modifying existing tools for their mother.

They tried different ways of creating larger handles and improving the grip. Each adaptation was shaped by a real circumstance: weak or painful hands, cold fingers, outdoor conditions and the need to use a tool while wearing gloves.

These experiments gradually revealed a wider design challenge.

A tick remover needed more than a functional tip. It needed an ergonomic shape that could offer comfort, grip and control without becoming cumbersome. It also needed enough strength for repeated use while retaining the precision required around small ticks.

What started as a family workaround began to develop into a more purposeful design process.

Searching for Greater Precision

Ticks encountered on the smallholding varied greatly in size.

The brothers experimented with polymer materials and increasingly fine removal profiles, aiming to create tips capable of engaging very small ticks, including nymph-stage ticks, without making the tool too fragile for practical use.

Finding the right balance took time.

The handle needed to be substantial enough for cold, gloved, weak or arthritic hands. The removal end needed to be fine and controlled. The complete tool needed to withstand repeated use across the varied situations that arise when caring for people and animals.

Years of adaptations, prototypes and practical observations helped shape the principles behind the VuxLore product range.

Real-Life Experience in Every Season

The ideas behind VuxLore were not developed from a single encounter.

They grew through years of checking animals and dealing with ticks in changing conditions—across seasons, different weather, different species and different life stages.

This experience was practical rather than clinical research, but it taught the brothers what mattered in everyday use:

  • A tool must be comfortable to hold

  • Grip and control matter as much as size

  • Cold hands and gloves change how a product feels

  • Very small ticks require precision

  • Frequent use exposes weaknesses in materials and design

  • Clear instructions are essential

  • Different users may need different tool formats

Those lessons continue to influence how VuxLore approaches product development.

Discovering the Knowledge Gap

Developing better tools was only part of the journey.

The family also spent years trying to find reliable information about ticks. Useful guidance was often scattered across different websites, authorities and specialist sources. There was no single, straightforward place that connected the practical questions people faced:

What kind of tick might this be? What life stage is it? How should it be removed? What should happen afterwards? What symptoms should be monitored? When might medical or veterinary advice be appropriate?

Learning about Lyme disease and other tick-borne risks made it clear that education was just as important as the removal tool itself.

Finding and removing a tick promptly can reduce the likelihood of transmission for some infections, including Lyme disease, but risks and transmission times vary. Species, life stage and appearance can provide useful context, but they cannot confirm infection or establish precisely how long a tick has been attached.

People needed clear guidance that explained both what could be understood and where uncertainty remained.

From Family Need to VuxLore

The experience on the smallholding became the foundation of VuxLore.

The aim grew beyond producing stronger or easier-to-grip removal tools. The brothers wanted to bring together the elements they had needed themselves:

  • Practical tick removal products

  • Clear instructions

  • Accessible tick education

  • Species and life-stage information

  • Prevention and checking guidance

  • Bite and aftercare information

  • Links to appropriate professional and authoritative resources

That vision is now taking shape through the VuxLore product range, Tick Knowledge Centre, Tick ID Centre and growing collection of educational resources with fun tick facts and myths developed along route of weird and wonderful questions.

Building the Future of VuxLore

VuxLore is the result of a real family problem, years of adaptation and the belief that products and knowledge should work together.

What began by improving tools so their mother could manage tick removal in the brothers’ absence has developed into a broader purpose: helping other people feel informed, prepared and better equipped when ticks are encountered.

The VuxLore of today is only the foundation.

As the brand develops, the focus remains the same—purposeful tools, accessible education, responsible innovation and clear communication about what is available now and what is still to come.

Because in real situations, the right tool matters. The right knowledge matters. And when the two come together, they can make a meaningful difference.
