Understanding tick habitats and hosts

Vegetation

Long grass, shrubs and low leaves can create places where ticks wait for passing hosts.

Outdoor spaces

Woodland, grassland, parks and gardens may contain suitable habitat, so awareness can matter in many settings.

Hosts

Ticks feed on hosts. Depending on species and life stage, hosts may include wildlife, pets, livestock and people.

Questing

Questing describes how a tick waits on vegetation or another surface for a suitable host to pass close enough to contact it.

Remember: Most tick bites do not result in illness, but a small number of ticks may carry germs, including those associated with Lyme disease. Tick awareness means using calm, sensible habits.
