A prompt, systematic tick check after outdoor activity can help find crawling or attached ticks that may otherwise be overlooked.

Ticks can be small and bites are not always painful, so a deliberate check after outdoor activity is an important awareness habit.

Check methodically

Look and feel across the skin, paying attention to warm or folded areas such as behind the knees, around the waistband, under the arms, the groin, hairline and back of the neck. Check clothing and equipment, and use age-appropriate help when checking children. Pets require checks suited to their species and veterinary guidance.

Official guidance

UKHSA recommends checking after activities including walking, gardening, running, camping and picnicking. See the UKHSA guidance and explore VuxLore’s Tick Knowledge Centre.
